Unicorns have shown its appeal across the world, to everyone from children to adults. They’re so well loved for their adorable and friendly looks. Drawing a unicorn and putting your own drawing on the wall might be a fun activity that any unicorn lover would enjoy. You can easily show your trademark personal style to any guest with your own painting. Anyone would feel pleasantly surprised by a lovely hand-painted unicorn welcoming them at the door. It’s also a great family activity you can do with your kids to strengthen your bond. However, unicorn drawing might be a challenging task for little kids, who may be not very skillful with their hands yet. Don’t worry, an easy unicorn drawing like what we’re showing you here will work just well. Just a few basic steps and the children can make their own little unicorns that they adore. Let’s begin!
1. Unicorn drawing step 1: Sketch the basic shape
Start with only large features of the unicorn: head and body. Use soft black pencil for sketching to easily erase and add the details later. A perfect circle is for unicorn head and another oval right next to it is the unicorn body. Notice to draw its body lower than the head and hide a part of it behind the head too. The size of the head is also a bit bigger than the body. All accurate details will develop from these basic shapes.
2. Unicorn drawing step 2: Drawing unicorn horn and ear
From here you will start with the actual structure with all the details you see in unicorn. You can use colored pencil here to draw the curve of unicorn jaw, add its horn and little ear. The size of these features should be in proportion to the head’s size. Or you can make it too small, or too big for comical effect.
3. Unicorn drawing step 3: Drawing mane, eye, mouth and nostrils
Proceed with other details on the head. Start with the beautiful mane. Just draw a natural curve on top, to the right of the head. Keep the wavy curve as natural as possible like you are drawing a curvy long hair. It might not be easy for children. You can tell them to loosen their hand, not to exert too much force on paper. By that way they can get pretty drawing of unicorn mane. Then add the stripes for the mane and the horn so your unicorn can look more real.
Move on with the big eyes and little nostril holes and mouth. While the nostrils and mouth can be easily done with simple curve and dots, the eyes might need more care for shining effect. To create a big, glittering eye for our cute unicorn, you create small white bubbles inside the eye and only fill color outside. Finally, add small eyelash above the eye to create a dreamy look. Just 3 steps and we already finish unicorn head drawing.
4. Unicorn drawing step 4: Drawing unicorn front legs
Draw two rectangle-shaped legs of the unicorn under the sketching of its body. Connect them with a soft curve. Pay more attention to the size and the gap of two legs so its lower body doesn’t look weird. The leg size should suit the body size that you drew in step 1. Try to make all the corners of the legs less sharp by rounding them off. Our adorable unicorn doesn’t really need sharp hooves, does he?
5. Unicorn drawing step 5: Draw unicorn’s hind leg and tail
Here comes the last step to finish our beautiful unicorn! Draw another leg with the same size as other legs at the very end of its body. Then connect it with the head and the two front legs by redrawing the body line that we did in step 1. Finally make two deep curves to create a lovely tail for the unicorn. Draw more details for the tail as you want to make it livelier. Now, for a clean drawing, erase the basic sketching of step 1. Your kid already got a cute unicorn to decorate their room.
6. Unicorn drawing step 6: Painting your unicorn
The most fun step that your kids will really enjoy. Let they paint the unicorn with their colorful imagination. They might not be the most skillful painters, but you’ll get surprised with their creativity when they play with colors. They will definitely be so eager to show to their friends and other family members the cute unicorn that they make themselves. And guess what, they might treasure it more than any unicorn plush toy you give them.
