What you’ll need (material and tool):
Before we show you how to make an Origami Unicorn, let’s go through the material and tool list and make sure that you have everything ready. This is one of the simplest designs and you do not need a lot other than a square sheet of paper to get started. Here’s the detailed list:
- 1 square sheet of paper. You can use standard Origami paper, gift wrapper, or plain white office paper.
- Your crafty hands. This is the most important!
- Some patience. It’s super easy, guaranteed.
Optional: anything you can use to decorate your Origami Unicorn and make it really colorful, unique, sparkly and magical, such as...
- Pens, pencils, colored pencils, crayons
- Your imagination. This is perhaps the second most important.
Now, are you ready? Let’s get down to it right below!
Step-by-step: how to make an Origami Unicorn
First fold the sheet in half, diagonally. Then open it up to create a crease.
Next, we need to fold the edges in on both sides.
Just like this:
Then make creases by folding the top edges so that they align with that diagonal line in the center.
Open them up.
Now fold the two longer edges towards the center and then open them to create two long creases.
Is yours looking like this?
You will end up with a shape with creases like in the picture below. Where the creases meet is where we should pay attention to. We have highlighted it with pink so it’s easier for you to see.
Take a closer look. The pink line is what we want to create now.
Using the creases that we have created before, fold the two adjacent edges in to create a flap.
Then create creases on both sides of that flap we just created.
Repeat steps 5, 6, 7 on the other side. The result should look like this, with two flaps:
Now just focus on this small detail: the flaps. Fold the longer edge of the flap so that it lies along the crease at the bottom of the flap.
Do the same to the shorter edge.
Pinch it to create a mini flap.
Repeat on the other side. Tada! Two mini flaps just like in the photo below. These are going to be your Origami Unicorn’s front legs.
We are about halfway through now! Phew! Be patient and stay with us, we’ll get there.
Now we fold the shape in half, lengthwise, along the middle line. Like this:
And this is what we get.
Fold the flaps down so that they’re sticking out the bottom. These are going to be the front legs of the Unicorn!
Now we fold the shorter end up and tuck it in, just like this:
Then fold it and tuck it in again, this time downwards.
This is the back legs of the Unicorn. So we want to make sure that it’s in line with the two front legs that we have created before.
Now fold the remaining longer end upwards.
And make sure it's nice and close to the front legs.
Just like this.
Now fold and tuck this pointy end so that it points to the front.
Fold back and tuck in one more time. This is the head. We’re starting to see the shape of a Unicorn now!
Fold it back, tuck it in, point it up, to create the horn. We’re almost there!
Make sure the horn is nice and straight up.
You can twist it too if you want.
And here you are… Your magical Origami Unicorn is DONE!
